COUP is the (typo)graphic design practice of Peter van den Hoogen.
He started as a cartoonist and illustrator for newspapers, magazines
and advertising offices, then studied graphic design at the University
of the Arts Utrecht (HKU) and became in 1994 one of the very first webdesigners in The Netherlands. In the following years he was responsible for many organisations' first websites including those of soccer club Ajax, de Bijenkorf, magazine Dutch and Volkswagen Nederland.
After his graduation in 1996, Peter worked as a new media art director, motion graphic designer, and from 1998 together with his wife Erica Terpstra under the name COUP as graphic designer, illustrator, art director, animator and creative consultant. COUP's work has been reviewed in design books and magazines and exhibited in Museums. It has been among the Best Book design prizes, Red Dot awards and nominations for the Art Director Club Nederland (ADCN) prizes and Rotterdam Design Prize.
Peter has teached dynamic typography at the Willem de Kooning academy and the HKU where he also teached typography. He was a guest teacher at the Sandberg Institute and Gerrit Rietveld Academy and conducted seminars and workshops at the Academy of Architecture Amsterdam, HKU and SUPSI in Lugano.
For a hobby Peter has been writing (in Dutch) unexpected stories about the role of automobiles in art and popular culture (on his own blog Limozine and in the Dutch newspaper de Volkskrant)
